The album was re-released in 2013 under the title Afro Blue Impressions Remastered and Expanded. This re-release won the Grammy Award for Best Album Notes. Personnel: John Coltrane: Tenor & Soprano Sax McCoy Tyner: Piano Jimmy Garrison: Bass Elvin Jones: Drums. Recorded: November 2, 1963 Auditorium Maximum, Freie Universität Berlin Free University of Berlin. John Coltrane. Afro Blue Impressions. The recordings that make up Afro Blue Impressions were acquired by jazz impresarioauteur Norman Granz during the tours he produced for many jazz artists during the 1960s, though they weren't issued until 1973. Recorded at shows in Berlin and Stockholm, the John Coltrane Quartet - with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones - is in tremendous form here, using a familiar repertoire in order to expand upon the group's own building blocks in creating the new post-harmonic system that the saxophonist was developing. its a great live recording from 63 Berlin and Stockholm, everyone was on fire that time and you can clearly hear it here. McCoy Tyner shines here as much as Coltrane and his piano play is way better recorded than on any Van Gelder's sessions. Downside is the bass somewhere in the background. Overall there is much more free vibe on all compossitions here (of course not as free as his later work) and they had picked them well indeed. Some of my favourite tracks are here including all time great "spiritual" and "afro blue". If you're not convinced just listen to 21 min long version of "my favourite things" online, one of the best ever recording of this classic tune!
