First off, I will say as most people who're aware of these releases know, the packaging looks great! Professional yet fun looking at the same time. The audio indeed sounds like it's been mastered for vinyl, and the pressing is very good, I didn't hear any pops or crackling on this. However, I have to nitpick here. First off, a few channels in each of the tracks have reverb added. I'm going to guess it was to add atmosphere to the tracks. Obviously the original game didn't have reverb in any of the tracks. But where they chose to add reverb is puzzling, for example, the amount of reverb put into "Poison Mind" makes it sound worse and doesn't have the 'sharpness' that one would expect for fighting a boss. The reverb isn't bad, it's just not uniform and feels slightly excess. On that note, a couple of the tracks don't fade out, they just "end" with the reverb fading. But none of that compares to what they did with "Walking On The Edge", oh boy. Someone decided it was a good move to insert game sound effects into the second loop of said track. It's very annoying. If they wanted to add sound effects, they could have added a separate track for them.Overall, this is NOT the best work they could have done. I'm a little disappointed with some of the problems listed before. I don't know how the Moonshake Boot compares, this release is probably still superior although with the hype and market surrounding it, I was expecting something a tad better. Still worth a copy if you want one though.UPDATE 8/31/2016:Apparently these are same renditions from a previously released compilation, and was likely licensed out to Mondo as such. Definitely not what anyone was expecting from Mondo (maybe Konami...... yeah, probably Konami). This actually really disappoints me further. This kind of release, IMHO, does not deserve all the variants it got at this point. Expect this kind of treatment for the other NES Castlevania releases Mondo says they'll be releasing. (Insert that one hashtag here with the word konami in it...)

Indeed, the music on this disc is from a previous compilation. It's easy to tell because "Walking on the Edge" has the same exact sound effect spread in it as on the original Japanese compilation - Akumajo Dracula Best. However, it looks like Castlevania II and III (especially III since its not medley based on the LPs like it is on Best) got better treatment - thank goodness. My qualm with this release is I just wish all the songs were on a single side and both sides were just the same. I kind of hate flipping this after a mere few minutes of music.

I totally agree with your assessment. The added reverb really took me out of the experience, and the fact that this wasn't a new mastering (or even recording) does not bode well for a few of the later entries. The one I am most concerned for is Dracula's Curse, which going by this issue means it will be the US version with the weaker instrumentation, and more unnecessary reverb.
X-MEN
No probs. Based on your update - Jeremy Parish (the reviewer from the article) has stated in some forum posts that Mondo reached out to him for input on how to improve the future CV titles. A lot of that of course depends on the versions that they can license from Konami, but at least it shows an intent to do better than this.

That's interesting and helps immensely , thanks for the info!

FYI the sound effects wasn't something they decided to add. The tracks on this release were taken from an older Castlevania CD compilation that featured these exact same versions (sound effects and all). Presumably this is the version of the soundtrack that Konami licensed out to Mondo, which is why it is like it is.Not defending what could have been a better release, but just trying to explain what's likely the reason for this choice. A reviewer from USgamer did a review that address these issues quite well: http://www.usgamer.net/articles/castlevania-original-soundtrack-ep-review-should-have-stayed-in-the-graveOverall I'm still fairly satisfied with the release, even though there are things that could've been better.

I agree 1000 for each sounds likely, but no numbers were ever confirmed for the grey splatter version.
