Album

I Heard It Through the Grapevine is the eighth studio album by soul musician Marvin Gaye, released on August 26, 1968 on the Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Originally released as In the Groove, it was the first solo studio album Gaye released in two years, in which during that interim, the singer had emerged as a successful duet partner with female R&B singers such as Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell. The album and its title track are considered both as Gaye's commercial breakthrough. I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye. I Heard It Through the Grapevine is a song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. The first recording of the song to be released was produced by Whitfield for Gladys Knight & the Pips and released as a single in September 1967 it went to number two in the Billboard chart. Marvin Gaye's version was included on his 1968 album In The Groove later re-titled I Heard It Through The Grapevine. After E. Rodney Jones, the Chicago disc jockey at WVON, started playing it on the air, Berry Gordy reconsidered and released Gaye's version as a single, which became even more popular and known as the definitive version of the song. And two months earlier on December 10th, 1967 I Heard It Through the Grapevine peaked at 2 for 3 weeks on the Top 100. The first two weeks it was at 2, the 1 record was Daydream Believer by the Monkees and for its third week at 2, Hello Goodbye by the Beatles was in the top spot. More on Genius. The Marvin Gaye version was placed on his 1968 album In the Groove, where it gained the attention of radio disc jockeys, and Gordy finally agreed to its release as a single in October 1968, when it went to the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969 and became for a time the biggest. Reconciling these competing expressions would prove to be a lifelong evolution, one that can be traced back to Gayes first solo commercial success, 1968s I Heard It Through the Grapevine. Like much of the music in Gayes early career, the release of the song was heavily contested and almost didnt happen. Luckily, producer Whitfield had it added to Gayes 1968 eighth solo album release, In the Groove, where it soon became popular via radio play and forced Gordys hand to release it as a single in October 1968. It was so successful that In the Groove was ultimately reissued with the title I Heard It Through the Grapevine
