The Miles Davis Quintet: American jazz band from 1955 to early 1969 led by Miles Davis. The quintet underwent frequent personnel changes toward its metamorphosis into a different ensemble in 1969. Most references pertain to two distinct and relatively stable bands: the First Great Quintet from 1955 to 1958 and the Second Great Quintet from late 1964 to early 1969, Davis being the only constant throughout. I know Miles was a forerunner of the blessed modal post-bop era that started about 1959. Of course, Kind of Blue and Milestones, both from that time period, received great recognition. They certain are good. But I don't think they can match Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. Read more. 3 people found this helpful. Depending on his evolutionary stage and mood you get very different music. If you are first time Miles listening or only want one Miles event this might not satisfy as much as Kind of Blue or Relaxing with music like so many other things is a matter of personal taste

This album carries nine tracks. Six of them are from the Davis Quintet’s November 7, 1969, Berlin Philharmonie concert.

The other three are “bonus” tracks:

Milestones (Davis)
Footprints (Shorter)
‘Round Midnight (Monk)

According to the liner notes, these three are Miles Davis Quintet recordings from the July 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland.

In attempting to verify this attribution, three problems arose.

First according to the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival published play list, the Miles Davis Quintet did not appear at that year’s festival.

Second, the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969 ran four days, June 18-22. While in other years the festival was in July, in 1969 only in June.

Third, these three tunes in that order with running times within a couple of seconds were recorded by Davis’ Quintet at a July 25, 1969 concert at the Festival Mondial du Jazz d'Antibes, La Pinède, Juan-les-Pins, France.

Video exist of the 1969 Festival Mondial du Jazz d'Antibes with the Quintet performing these three tunes in that order and with identical running times.

These three “bonus” track are, in fact, from the 1969 Festival Mondial du Jazz d'Antibes.

I'm of the opinion that it is not correct to call this an 'unofficial' release. Gambit Records is perfectly legal in Europe, albeit perhaps not in the US.
