Generally speaking I struggle to listen to and like most of what passes for "full on" trance. Call me an old hippy nostalgic for the heady days of Goa trance, but the combination of hard and cheesy that characterises much full on is something I just can't stomach. Tipworld have released a lot of this full on in its compilations since its glory days as the late-lamented Tip Records. I should really hate this release then, just as I dislike most of the recent Tipworld compilations and albums and singles by GMS, 1200 mics, Alien Project, etc etc. However, this compilation, whilst it contains some of the aforementioned artists, has enough coherence and innovation to make it interesting, if not an all-out classic. The theme of ancient shamanic ritual and dance is maintained throughout, and this is manifested in an unusually high amount of ambient soundscaping, long atmospheric intros and outros, tribal drums, chants and so on, for a full on type release at any rate. Whilst some of the tracks, especially those by GMS and 1200 mics, do descend into the usual cliched formulae, frenzied mania and indigestible cheddar we know them for, those excursions into the realm of tweeny bopper trance are relatively short, and even these tracks have other features that render them interesting. The tracks by Benji Vaughan, Eat Static and Hujaboy are excellent, and surprisingly the Bullet Proof track is no slouch. So, a more thematically coherent album than any of the 1200 mics theme albums; one that actually does manage to hang together and mean something. This makes it a little better than most of the Tipworld compilations from the mid noughties. ~*~
