The breakbeats rattled so fast, they were dubbed drill 'n' bass the arrangements had more twists and turns than an M. Escher drawing. And then there were those incredible fretless bass solos, which . producer Tom Jenkinson-performed himself. Years later, the results still sound not just blindingly original, but also wildly exhilarating-and beautiful, too, full of soothing melodies to balance out all that restless e. Although, like the preceding Port Rhombus EP, this album sounds substantially cleaner and more thought out than previous releases for Spymania and Rephlex, it also far surpasses those releases in terms of musicality and track development, not simply relying on the shock value of tripping-over-myself drum programming and light-speed fretless bass noodling. Squarepusher's best work and now that I finally own it on vinyl it's probably my favourite in my, albeit rather small collection apart from Throbbing Pouch. Everything blends together so well on this album, the drum programming, the bass playing, the jazz elements, goddamn it's near impossible for me not to not start shaking my leg in time to the tracks on it. Marking the start of Jenkinsons LPs padding out the shelves of Warp, Hard Normal Daddy sought influence from funk masterminds like Herbie Hancock and created a stunning live electronic hybrid on cuts like Beep Street and Papalon while his affinity with the more unforgiving realms of UK club music and acid-tinged electronica come to fore on frenetic workouts like Chin Hippy. Seen by many as his finest work, Hard Normal Daddy finds Squarepusher in his typical space unshackled, widely-influenced and truly singular. Read More. Digital Track List. Hard Normal Daddy, 1997. Anyone know of a repress in the works? Surprised there hasn’t been it’s been 23 years and this is his most famous release

I think the only issue with this album is that it feels a little outdated, but that's a good thing imo. One of my all time favourite albums.

Lovely bloke on eBay just sold me this gem on vinyl for a tenner. TJ's Warp debut...and what a debut it is. Straight from the opening Spy music that is "Coopers World" to the closing pseudo-ambience of "Rebus", this is one for the archives."Beep Street" remains my favorite pusher track, even after almost 20 years(!)..."Papalon" weaves a story with no words; "E8 Boogie" definitely lives up to its name (if this track doesn't make you move...). "Male Pill 13" is beautifully melodic and skittery at the same time. "Rustic Raver", "Chin Hippie" and "Rat/P's and Q's" are suitably ravey insanity. "Vic Acid" needs no words, as it is brilliant in every way. All in all, very very few downsides to this one. 10/10

The booklet is nice poster :)

This guy is a musical prodigy and very talented in the sense that he plays lots of instruments and does all the effects and production himself. His talents are mind boggling and you have to take your hat off to him. For me this has always been my favourite of his - I wished he would slow things down and go back to this style again. This is a very melodic and playful album. And on a side note: when is he going to team up with Ceephax and give us the electronic Bros album we've all been waiting years for?! That would be quite an interesting listen I'm sure!!

Hard Normal Daddy wasn't a big deal to me at first. None of the albums I love are. But this turned into one of those albums I can listen to start to finish any time of day with any emotion and just feel incredible. What out there is really comparable to this release? Jenkinson covers a lot of ground, but I'd say the overall theme is playful energy. There's a lot of fast paced electronic music out there that just sounds mean, or aggressive, or just plain too silly. But these tracks here are refined and feel purposeful. The sample choices are nothing groundbreaking alone, but they blend perfectly. 5/5
Exellent
did a cold-buy on this disc; i liked aphex twin's drill n bass, and figured i'd like squarepusher's too. but holy shit this is better than Hangable Auto Bulb or DrukQs. made my jaw drop. simply amazing.

I just can say when we where kids we only have had about 10 CDRs or so and we listened to this album from dusk till dawn and I still love it today. I think Tom is one of the uniques musicians around. I always would recognize his stuff. His production skills are kind of unhuman, especially the drum programming. Not to mention his bass playing skills...My favorites on this LP are 'Rustic Raver', 'Chin Hippy', 'Papalon', 'E8 Boogie', 'Fat Controller' ahh forget it one cant decide on this brilliant album :_)Always a joy to my ears, mind and feet - one couldnt sit still when listening to this!A d&b classic.

The first two track are really GREAT! The rest is just nervous, shreddered beat stuff. I hear some people really like this, but not me. In any way I admire the drum programming. Technically, a good release, but too hectic for my taste.

that's how i felt at first! i really loved beep street and coopers world, also liked male pill, and somehow didn't appreciate the rest of it too much. It took me quite some time and then it just clicked i guess. now i love every second of this masterpiece! of course it's kinda hectic, nervous and exhausting, but then it's so groovy and beautiful too! A really unique atmosphere, gloomy and uplifting at the same time, full of energy and emotion - tom jenkinson really takes you to a special place where nobody else can take you. so this album will probably grow on you eventually. and as your comment is from 2003 (lol) - did you change your mind in the meantime? greetings, credo

one of mr jenkinson's less sought gems.. a score, if you can find a copy. a great cover to match the masterful content. more fluid and consistent than other releases like 'music is rotted one note', or 'maximum priest' - expect a slightly less turbulent ride than his other stuff.

Tom Jenkinson makes his d'nb approach to jazz music. Speeded up to 320 bpm, this is breathtaking, sometimes melodious, sometimes cold acid-technology. Absolutely a classic.

This is one of the definitive Warp releases, which is not saying little. A perfect blend of weird drill'n'bass and out of this world jazz. The best track in my opininon is Papalon, and there are few downpoints on the record. Be sure to check out this absolute classic!
