Anticipated nearly as much as it was delayed, the proper studio follow-up, Phrenology, finally appeared in late 2002, after much perfectionist tinkering by the band - so much that the liner notes include recording dates covering a span of two years and, sometimes, histories for the individual tracks. Coffeehouse music programmers beware: Phrenology is not Things Fall Apart redux it's a challenging, hugely ambitious opus that's by turns brilliant and bewildering, as it strains to push the very sound of hip-hop . Love this album, and love this band! The pressing and release by VMP is fantastic, worth every penny!Seeds 2.0 is the song that got me into The Roots! LEGENDARY!
Abandoned Electrical
Interestingly my copy is black and not brown marbeled. Anyone else got a black copy from vmp?
Mine is brown but very dark and the marble is barely visible when not held against the light.
This absolutely sounds better than I've ever heard this album sound. Phrenology is an album that i've deeply loved over the years, so I'm very familiar with how this "should" sound. especially on tracks like Water and Something in the Way of Things, it's like hearing it for the first time. clean and quiet in moments of silence; rich and dynamic at it's heights. Jacket, artwork, discs are all top notch.i am extremely disappointed that it doesn't contain the false start of The Seed. I cannot fathom the reasoning was behind leaving this on the cutting floor. it's a small special detail that most people probably dont care about or have never heard. I also think it would have been a nice touch if they had separated the bonus tracks more (extra spacing or hidden groove track), but that's a stretch. For me these minor (to some) things prevent this from being a flawless reissue. but in all other aspects this release nails it.
I didn't know that, I don't think that's on my Rubber Soul. Now I gotta look for that record.
I agreed with everything you said about that edit (also jealous I wasn't the first to bring it up on here), it's always been easily my favorite moment on this album. A lot of essence in that false start. I've seen Questlove at concerts twice, if I see him again I'm going to have to find a polite way to bring it up.
I completely understand the disappointment of the missing false start on The Seed. I first heard The Beatles' Rubber Soul as the US version. "I'm Looking Through You" has a false start which I found so charming. Once I heard the UK version of the album, it was hard for me to prefer it over the version that had initially turned me on to it.
Very nice pressing of another essential album. Sounds thick and warm. The beats and rhyme spitting are ultra present and the record offers a delicious vibe as the needle does a smooth clean groove ride. Very pleased with the quality of this pressing as well as the music it contains.
But is this a repress of the original vinyl with the extended versions of a couple of tracks, or just the CD slapped on wax?
How long in Phrenthrow on this version? On CD it's 18 seconds, while on the OG vinyl it's over 2 minutes...
It does not have the extended versions like the OG version
this is a new remaster. as far as i can tell the only thing that's not present that should be is The Seed false start (which... is actually on the CD too)
Not 100% sure on all of the differences between the original vinyl press and other versions, but I have an OG vinyl and this one. The OG has a false start on The Seed that not present on the VMP version.
Gotta say, this is an amazing press. Very well done by Sterling and VMP.
Sound is fantastic, packaging great. Vinyl is a dark brown, flat and quiet. Great job by VMP
Beautiful packaging and pressing. The archival paper VMP uses for the artwork is fantastic as well. For anyone interested: the vinyl is marbled brown, but not even slightly transparent. Beautiful nonetheless. So happy with their Record of the Month releases (as of recent). They did it again.Roots crew forever.
Vinyl, Me Please will most likely be doing an Essentials release of this very very soon. Keep those eyes peeled.
Got mine today. Beautiful sound and they did an excellent job with the cover art.
It's going to be a real thing ! Seen previews , Gold Foils on jacket cover looks awesome !
An understated and underrated follow up to Things Fall Apart that does not receive the credit it rightfully deserves. On tracks like Quills, P*ssy Galore and Water, Black Thought's lyrics seize your attention with political command. In more ways than one, it is more conscious rap than its predecessor.
Removed from my “wantlist” because every other day another becomes available but you all want way too much for a record that plenty of people seem to be cool with getting rid of
Thirsty! is a cover of the Thomas Schumacher ‎track When I Rock from 97 which sampled The Roots. Goes around comes around and all that.
The Roots' most experimental album, Phrenology may not be as consistently brilliant as Illadelph Halflife but is undoubtedly the record where you will find their most creative music. Astonishingly diverse, the tracks encompass everything from smooth R&B (Break You Off), hardcore punk (!!!!!), Techno (untitled), fusion (Something in the Way of Things) and completely off-the-wall avant-garde psychedelia (the second half of Water). Black Thought is on top of his game throughout and Talib Kweli makes a killer guest appearance on Rolling with Heat, so you can rest assured that the spitting is of a high grade. One of the boldest and most rewarding Hip-Hop albums in history and a testament to the ingenuity and vision of The Legendary Roots Crew.
