As the title suggests, Ultravox were in a gray mood as they launched into their seventh studio LP, their previous existential angst now pooling around personal anguish. The album's title track was a study in languorous melancholy, where the emotional pain lingered on and on. And why would it ever dissipate, when romance is forever doomed, as When the Time Comes exquisitely illustrated Even One Small Day, the most musically celebratory song on the set, battles depression but dismally loses the war. Released April 6, 1984. Lament Tracklist. White China Lyrics

For an 80's picture disc, can anyone comment on how the sound quality is for this pressing?
It's decent, no big complaints at all, "for an 80's picture disc".Most of them have turned tea-stained though, most probably due to people leaving them in the original PVC sleeve. Big mistake.ps. considering that most people never played these picture discs at all, beyond any PVC disaster, hunting down a Mint copy will be worth it, if you like the music + aesthetics.
As opposed to most of the other Ultravox album re-issues, this is as faithful to the original design as can be, beautiful packaging! But, to call this a "Definitive Edition" is a bit sad though, as first of all, Man Of Two Worlds (Instrumental) that is included on the other re-issues of this album is absent. If to make any sense, why not make CD 1 as the original CD with the three extra remix tracks and fill CD2 with at least the long German remix of Heart of the Country, Man Of Two Worlds (Instrumental) and why not the US 12" Dancing W/One Small Day?

CD release date is 1984. This CD was Digitally Remastered. Some of the tracks are either remixed or extended from those on the original LP Album.
As stated in the edit history, I was involved in the production & release of the 2017 'Lament' 2018 other Ultravox album re-issues an, categorically, no specific releases were made for the US or any other territory other than the UK & Europe. This item (and the other 2017 'US' releases) are simply the UK/European edition with an importer's sticker and should not warrant a separate listing. However I have repeatedly been voted down on edits so am making the comment here instead.
? does anyone know if this is a different remaster than the 2009 edition? Ultravox - Lament
Correct. It is the 2009 remaster , as are all the Chrysalis UV CD reissues from November 2017 to April 2018.
It indicates (P) 2009 so it looks like the same remaster from that time. Just nicer packaging. It's cool to have the thermographically printed CD folio! I'm guessing the same booklet, too. I never got the 2009 DLX RM of that album [I have all of the others in that series with the O-cards], and just saw this and picked it up this weekend.
My C side is severely off-centred and practically unlistenable beyond C1 - all true that those are the most lame tracks on this release, but still (I'd switch C2 + C3 for Lament (Extended Mix))How are your copies? The remastering isn't that bad at all - the album is really OK even if I still prefer my original UK copy.
Good - why only 'almost' perfect? Some of the extended mixes on vinyl again would be good, I agree.
I contacted them and my replacement copy is perfect (almost)! :DRe: AloneWithStrangers "PS - the main album was not remastered at all, intentionally. The original production master tape was used to create the master for this release." Yes, that figures - it still isn't "the exact same" as when I did my comparison
PS - the main album was not remastered at all, intentionally. The original production master tape was used to create the master for this release. Some of the second disc tracks originate from the 2009 Definitive Edition remasters.
Did you order from Pledge? If so, you should contact them for a replacement - the TPs & my own copy do not have the same issue so I think yours is an unfortunate misspressing.
Mastering is a little on the hot side, but is refreshingly clear and vivid - this after enduring the relatively mediocre sound quality of the Baby Driver soundtrack on NEW vinyl. I mean, just LISTEN to the intensity of those Linn drums on "White China"...... DANG.The Cinram-pressed wax is exceptionally quiet even by Canadian standards - other than some light rumble in between tracks, the noise floor is totally inaudible. All of the Ultravox albums I've previously heard on vinyl have had consistently great and clear sound quality - just added this one to my collection and this is no exception. Not to mention that my dad introduced me to Ultravox and Bill Nelson! ????
I would have appreciated if the original playing order from the CD had been kept, even if it means "two extra track between the A and B side of the vinyl". >> Ultravox - Lamentthe other extra tracks makes this the ultimate Lament on CD if you ask me.
? Just a question! ... are the Work in Progress mixes as horrible as they are on the other Ultravox re-issues? Wonder why they chose these unimiginative half measures when they omitted official material like "Heart Of The Country (Special Remix)" or the US remixes of Dancing or One Small Day.
My copy of this release has the catalog number VK 41459 printed on the CD in place of F2 21459 pictured here.
My version of this LP has strange Matrix / Runout codes that I can't seem to find anywhere. They are:-Matrix / Runout (Side A, stamped): CDL 1459 A//4▽ 420 H 11 3Matrix / Runout (Side B, stamped): CDL 1459 B//3▽ 420 H 11 1I just wondered if anyone could explain this to me?Thanks!
U Vox highest Album Chart entry , atmospheric and danceable
Where did you get that? Not only it isn't the highest chart entry, it isn't even close to their best position in the LP charts anywhere.
What's wrong with this sound!? Previous remaster has been much lighter & brighter.
The master used is EXACTLY the same as the 2008 remaster CD. Of all the remasters of this album, this is probably closest to the original CD and is less 'limited' than many of the previous remasters which may go some way to explaining why it seems less 'bright' to you.
I only have the vinyl, but to know if a remaster is "wrong" I believe it should be compared with a good version of the original release, not a remaster. A brighter sound may not be in accordance with the artists original intentions. For instance the Edsel Edition of John Foxx "Metamatic" is very bright and also I believe the bass is increased which completely destroys the sound in comparison with how the album originally sounded. The difficult task is to find the right original version. As far as I know it's more or less impossible to know which editions are taken from the best original masters and in the case CD:s from the eighties they may even be taken from masters intended for vinyl.
Is this the edition with the die-cut cover? I had a pressing that had a window die-cut where the photo was and the photo on the inner sleeve showed through the die-cut, similar to the Architecture + Mortality sleeve for OMD that Peter Saville also designed.
Well, I bought one as an import in the US as soon as it came out. And stupidly sold it off when I bought the UK CD in 1985. I later got the thermographic pressing but have found no evidence of the earlier LP I once owned.
Except for the thermographic sleeve version of the 1st pressing, never saw any die-cut versions with the stones picture.
